I don't know Manuel's personal situation, but I know that he sincerely tried to give us a new version.

My guess is that the code is not pretty, it was written with older tools and components, and that it's embarrassing to give it to everyone, at this point. I have code like that.

One of the reasons why Jabaco has had so much interest is because of Microsoft did to VB6. They killed it. They stopped supporting it. They said all of the VB6 programmers were crazy and VB6 could not be updated or made better. When Microsoft was asked to put VB6 in the public domain (e.g. open source) they simply refused.

If you go to Manuel's site Jabaco is listed as deprecated. He is not doing anything with it. (Just like Microsoft.) He won't update it or fix it. When asked to put the source code in the public domain he does not even have the courtesy to respond. Like Microsoft he has left all kinds of programmers in the cold. I have emailed him (no reply). I have tried posting on this site and someone stops the post from happening.

I will never go to this site again, it is a waste of time. Nothing has changed since what 2009 or before. This is sinful. PUT THE CODE IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN what are you afraid of?

Manuel, I managed programmers teams since 1974, starting with very early BASIC, Cobol, Assembrel, Fortran, 4GL,.. all sort of programming language and I personally learned all of them just to well understand what my people were developing. I always preferred RAD (Rapid Applications Development) or 4GL (4th Generation Lamguages) programming languages for simple business reasons (time-to-market, readibility of sources, easy and quick learning, fast sources changind, etc.) that's why I dislike programming languages like .NET, C++, Java, Perl, and clones because not meeting business needs (the business words are : fast, easy, flexible, quick implementation, programmers interchange, etc.).

Back to 1964 BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) development was commissioned to Dartmouth College and to a small software company called Microsoft, by General Electric Information Services (GEIS) Company (where I spent 30 years of my carreer) to be used as first on-line programming language with Time-Sharing world wide MK1 (then MKII and MKIII) services (the only ww private network, well before Internet).

Back to BASIC (april,8,200 I really didn't and do not understand MS regarding to VBasic. When too much money arrives, eyes become totally blind; that is what I tell to myself to try to understand MS policy (and not only for programming languages).

Finally back to Jabaco, after looking unsuccesfully for years to some sort of VB6 replacement, I found Jabaco very interesting for main 3 reasons : 1) 99% Visual Basic RAD coding, 2) multiplatform (compiled Java) and 3) idipendent from vendors policy. However with really great surprise I found this poject stopped in 2009. Why? With a lot of worldwide VB promgrammes waiting for this type of brilliant solution?

I understand you are alone in developing this project. Why alone? Didn't you create a small company to develope it? Not sure on future return on investment? I'm surely ready to contribute to this project development. Why you are not using today crowdfunding possibility to rise money for future Jabaco development? I see here about 3.000 Jabaco fans, let imagine 50% of them are willing to help you i.e. with € 100 each, which means about € 150.000 for your company to continue Jabaco developemnt and support.

I would support a crowdfunding initiative. Java 8 compatibility, some bugfixes and comprehensive documentation seem most pressing.

I can understand the frustration of those who have invested their time in Jabaco only to see it languish somewhat over the past few years but I'm nonetheless extremely grateful for Manuel's incredible efforts so far. The idea of building cross platform Java-based apps with a VB6 syntax is not something I ever thought I'd see, and it's been a nice introduction to Java for me at the same time.

So, I do hope this project continues but I just want to say thanks in the meantime.

I discovered the existence of Jabaco (JAva-BAsic-COmpiler) for a short time, perhaps because the name is unlikely to be associated with the visual basic and the search engine from Mountain View for my failure I had never addressed on this website. I'm not a professional programmer and I used VB6 to create visual applications in structural engineering for the past eight years. I know as an amateur also other procedural programming languages, and I'm away from the object-oriented programming. The RAD Jabaco environment plays very well the development environment of VB6, and is similar to other RAD environments both commercial and open-source (Delphi, Lazarus, FireFly etc.). The fact of producing Java bytecode, then being tied to a proprietary technology and antagonist to MCIL of DOTNET actually keeps me away from taking this wonderful project. In the future in the RAD environment commercial version we will also see an adoption instead of java J# (J#BACO)?

Non sono un programmatore professionista ed ho utilizzato VB6 per realizzare applicazioni visuali nell'ambito dell'ingegneria strutturale negli ultimi otto anni. Conosco da dilettante anche altri linguaggi di programmazione di tipo procedurale, e stò alla larga dalla programmazione Object-Oriented. L'ambiente RAD di Jabaco riproduce molto bene l'ambiente di sviluppo del VB6, ed è simile anche ad altri ambienti RAD sia commerciali che open-source (Delphi, Lazarus, FireFly ecc.). Il fatto di produrre bytecode Java, quindi essere legati ad una tecnologia proprietaria ed antagonista al MCIL di .NET di fatto mi tiene lontano dall'adottare questo meraviglioso progetto. In futuro nella versione commerciale dell'ambiente RAD vedremo anche una adozione al posto di java di di J# (J#BACO)?
