Portable Jabaco

While there is one thread in German regarding a portable version of Jabaco, can the Jabaco software be made portable? PortableApps.com has a portable Java installation that could be used by Jabaco. My initial attempts to make it portable did not work. I would like a portable version so I could program my small projects at work and home as well as make it available for my students to learn a VB6 programming language that they could take home on their pen drives.

Thanks for the great program and the desire to keep VB6 style programming alive.

Jabaco has (or had?) a licensing mechanism where a mail address together with a license code is stored in the Windows registry.
There may be additional registry entries needed for the Java environment.

It is a good idea to have Jabaco portable.
I have to confess that I simply (robo)copy my project directory back and forth between my work and home PC.
But for a school it certainly would be nice to have everything on a memory stick.

Could you explain a bit more in detail what difficulties you have encountered in your attempts to use Jabaco in a portable way?

The primary problem is that the program does not recognize the dependencies are located in the local folder on the pen drive. I had installed the software on the computer, copied that installation to the pen drive (from Program Files), then added the system files that are installed from the win32 installer (using uniextract) to the same folder. I ran the uninstaller to clean out the system from the Jabaco installer, but my pen drive contents would not run either the Jabaco.exe or Jabaco.jar. I even tried to use the Java Portable installation from my pen drive to run the Jabaco.jar directly, but it did not work either.

I posted a message in the PortableApps.com forum as well for assistance in portabilizing Jabaco, but I have not received any response there.

While it is easy enough to dump a registry file on the target system to use the Jabaco key for email and License, that does not appear to be enough to get either the Jabaco.exe or Jabaco.jar to run without a full install.

I don't think, that PortableApps.com are the right contact persons for that.
PortableApps.com have only OpenSource Software. So they have the possibility to make non-portable Apps to portable Apps.
But Jabaco isn't OpenSource. So the only one who can make Jabaco portable is Manuel.
And I personally think, that this is a theme, which have very low priority for him.

PortableApps.com has opened up to freeware applications as well. They have produced a standardized format for portable application structure that mimics much of the Windows structure. For that reason, I wondered if it was possible to make Jabaco into a portable application. This would enable me to teach my students with a programming IDE that they can take home with them and work on in class.

I would support PortableApps to create a portable version if they need any help. But I can't do that by myself in the current project state ... I'm not averse to support a portable version in future.

Thank you for your support. Normally someone of the PortableApps.com community will take on the portabilization of open-source or freeware applications if the original developer or development team does not have one currently available. The post can be found here:

Would the portable Framework be enough (Jabacos Framework is OpenSource)? I don't know about these things at all (I only use my home PC for this stuff), but just thought that making the Framework portable would be some kind of help(?).
